PROGRAM SUMMARY NO. 853Collaborative Problem Solving Program
  2017-12-09 15:27:00
What interesting conversations we had at the program this morning! We spoke, shared, and learned a lot.

 We had fun discussing:

 * How collaborative problem solving (CPS) programs are taught in Singapore and Oakland, California.

 * Which occupations require CPS skills (most), and which do not (none we could name).

 * Basic skills of CPS: interpersonal skills, mature communications, coordination, facilitation, decision making, problem-solving strategies, and content-understanding.

 * Why CPS is not systematically taught in high schools and universities in China.

 * Results of the CPS exercises we played.

For example, these are the results of our CPS exercise to find a way to get people to read more books in China:

 1. Require people to read all the books on state-approved book lists before they can complete special events such as marriage, graduation, divorce, wedding anniversaries, or entering a school.

2. Hold reading competitions all over China at which the fastest readers who pass comprehension tests win rich prizes.

3. By law require all Chinese high school students to read one book a week each year in high school in order to graduate high school and attend college.

We learned by doing CPS exercises that our CPS skills need some improvement:

 1. Not everyone in CPS groups got an equal opportunity to talk.

 2. CPS groups began working on the problem before understanding the problem.

 3. Not everyone in a CPS group shared his/her individual opinions.

 4. Facilitators lacked an understanding about how to facilitate a CPS group.

 5. Some group members did not patriciate in the activities of the CPS group.

 6. Some group members wanted to shift the goal of the group away from solving the assigned problem to changing the rules or objectives of the discussion.

We had a productive and interesting program all done in English!
